Factors Affecting English Language Teaching and Learning

           Today is Tuesday. In the morning, I learned Seminar in English Language Teaching course.

Today, I learnt about Factors Affecting English Language Teaching and Learning in Higher Education. Teacher thought us 4 main topic; students' age, learner differences ,motivation and teachers.

        First, students' age. There are 3 types ; young children , adolescents and adult learner.

Young children, they need attention and like to do activity or game. Adolescents, they like challenge. Adult learners, they have more discipline than teenagers and they have their goal in learning.

       Next topic is learner differences. Learner differences consists of 2 topic ; Good learner character and learner styles.

Good learner character are well prepare,set goal,review lesson after class and self- direction learner.

Learner styles are enthusiast, the oracular, the participator and rebel.

     Next topic is motivation. Motivation has 2 points.

1. Defining motivation

  - Extrinsic motivation : outside factor

 - Intrinsic motivation : come for individual

2. Sources of motivation

    - expectation

    - teacher / method

   - family

 The last topic is Teacher. There are 4 points.

1. Teachers' belief.

2. Teacher's ability in using English

3. Teaching method and style

4. Teachers' use of teaching and learning materials

      In this week, I know many things about an Factors Affecting English Language Teaching. It is very important information and useful for me. It's make me know about the problem and how to solve it in classroom in the future. Moreover, this journal can help teacher to know learning style of students.

Classroom learning context : teachers' description

       Today is Tuesday. In the morning, I learned Seminar in English Language Teaching course.

First, teacher asked me to share my life time in Indonesia and my experience to all of my friends. I'm very excited because all of my friend look at me and listen to me. Moreover, I have to use English to explain about my experience

           Next, teacher asked us to read " Classroom learning context: teacher's descriptions" and analyzed into chart. In chart, it included; use of space, use of time, Language data, resources, interaction, and atmosphere. There are three example classroom; Malaysian, Mozambican, and Chinese classroom.

          Next, teacher asked us to work in pair and asked us to comment each classroom , tell the strange and weakness of each classroom and choose one classroom that we like most and tell why we like it. Then, teacher asked some pair to present in front of class.

       Next, teacher asked us to draw mind map about  " Factors affecting ELT and learning " and share the information with friends.

       In this week, I feel very nervous because I did not attend in this class for a month. However, Life must be go on. I tried to read the journal and tried to understand it. 

Life is fun!

       Today was a wonderful and joyful day for me because I can take my trip around Bandung. I have a city tour with Indonesia’s friends. The first place is St. Tegdoral where is a household name church in this city and the biggest church also. It is a very beautiful of architecture and it has an ancient historical there. After that, I walked from the church to Arlung – Arlung Road and then I ate my brunch there. Along this street has a lot of restaurant but it is quite expensive for me because many foreigner go there. After I finished my brunch I separated with my friends for keep walking around that road. I found many painted pictures along the street. Absolutely, I bought one for my mom a price around 350,000 Rp but I asked for discount 250,000. I bought it just 100,000 or around 260 baht. Then, I walked to visit Mosque and beautiful garden. It is said that If you come to Bandung but you do not visit the Mosque, You do not arrive Bandung city. Then I went to see a Museum of Asian – African Conference where is the place delegates from Asian and African came to make a commitment. Moreover, The Museum shown me that the important situation ever happen in Indonesia. Then, I went to Nu Art Sculpture Park where is a perfect place about art in this city. It is portray by rush hours of yhe people in Indonesia and satirical of the previous of time in Indonesia. It is my last place for today. Before my friends and I arrived the dorm we stopped at the market to buy some fresh food for our dinner. My Philippines friends cooked Philippines food and I cooked green curry, fried morning- glory, fried chicken with garlic. We really enjoy our food and we have a fantastic time together.

    

Life is journey

        Today, I woke up very early around 05.40 because I had to catch a school bus at Pelita Nusantara elementary school and the last school bus at 07.10 that mean I have to come to Pelita Nusantara elementary school before 7.00 o’clock and I cannot miss the bus. The journey take around 50 minutes. When I arrived the school I cannot believe my eyes because the school look like village and the environment is like their house. The teacher gave me a warm welcome and they gave some information like a activity, school’s curriculum and schedule. We have only 1 day for practicing and 2 days for observation. Do you think is it good for me? I thought it is not good for me because I came here only 1 month that why I have to teach more as much as I can. After that, we started to observe school environment and class attendance. After that, we went back to UPI and I sent a message to my teacher in Thailand about this schedule she was not pleasure with this. Then I sent a message to Dr. Rita and Dr. Tatan to talk with their team to find solution for me. Moreover I sent a message to Dr. Vidhi also because he is concern our teaching in the school. I’m very pleasure with all of them because they are really concern with my problem until Dr. Rita said that we will discuss for your new schedule for you around 4 or 5 days for teaching here. You know what today was my bad day for me because I have a cold and running nose. I think I should take a medicine immediately.

       At the evening, we went to Ciwalk mall to find some food there I order lamp curry soup there with rice and my drink is hot tea because it can help me to get well. I bought a Tolak Angin procpld medicine

Micro teaching in Pelita Nusantara School

       Today I met Dr. Hundi who is my supervisor in UPI. He explained what should I do when I

teach students in Pelita Nusantara school and we discussed about school’s curriculum. Moreover, we talked about lesson plan based on curriculum 2013 and elements of lesson such as objective, activity, assessment and closing. In addition, He suggests some techniques like a Total Physical Respond. After that, I took a break around 45 minutes and I started to discussed with my friends that I’m very worry about lesson plan because I never see any example lesson plan in Indonesia before I come here and since I stay here. Then I went to meet Dr. Ibu Iyen, who is concern about our teaching in here. We discussed about Lab school and Pelita Nusantara school. She said that in Pelita Nusantara school has their own curriculum and students in there can speak English very well and high quality education there. Moreover, She asked me about the problem since I came here. I said that I would like to go to school and I would like to know their school are. I took a time for discussing with her around 1 hour. Then, I went to the library near by the meeting room and I’m started to talk with them we have to go to our school tomorrow but this is informal visit.

        I sent a message to Mr. Tatan and Dr. Ritan who are the principle of Pelita Nusantara school that tomorrow we will visit your school but it is informal visit.

At evening, I went to canteen outside of university and enjoy our food. Before I’m really think I will lose my weight because the food is not delicious and I cannot eat it. Actually, it is delicious and quite same taste in Thailand. I promise that I’m not lose my weight here.

    

   

THE MORE PRACTICE, THE PROFESSOR YOU ARE!

     Today I was very tired because I sleep late for 2 nights and woke up very early. I have 2 class both grade 10 and 11. I think I will use all my energy to teach my students. In grade 11, I’m very nervous because my mentor teacher joined in the class to observe me. I taught about narrative text. Before I started class I divided students into 5 groups and I give a piece of paper of the narrative text such as The smartest animals. Then students have to arrange the story into correct paragraph. After they finished I explained about narrative text about what is narrative text, orientation, complication, resolution and language features. Next, I assigned students to arrange the story again but it is from the book. The last activity, I command students to make a groups of 3 persons for creative the story but it based on orientation complication and resolution when they finished their work. They have to present their story in front the class. Students were really enjoy their work and did a great job. For grade 10 I continued the lesson, I started by letting students to play a game of dividing the words that I provide into the correct past of speech. Then I started to explain of noun phrase and gave them about the example of noun phrase. After I finished I let them to do a quiz of noun phrase. I was surprise some students got full points and some got 18-19 from 20 but some got 8-17 also. I gave them a homework about using adjective to modify a noun.

   I think today is the tires day of me but it is my fantastic day for me also because I taught my lovely student and they are really enjoy with me. 

My first class in Pelita Nusantara school

       Today was my challenge day for me because I had to observe in the Global perspective class at 10.30-12.00 with Mr. Hundri who is a teacher teach in this class. But something that I cannot believed that Mr. Hindri was absent in this class and my mentor teacher told me that you have to teach students. Moreover, I did not have book for global perspective class and I did not have any idea about global perspective before. However, I had to teach them in grade 11A and 11B by using the topic from internet. There were 3 topics together: 1.what word is the best describe yourself? 2. Which is the most important between beauties / handsome or intelligent? 3. Which is do you prefer by do homework and no homework?. Students are divided into two team that is agree and disagreed. If someone disagreed must be in the same team and think to support your idea, It made students really joyful and they can share their idea in front the class. I used the same activity for both class. After I finished the class my mentor teacher command me to start teaching on Wednesday in English subject of grade 10 and 11 for military class. It was my good news for me to practice my teaching but I have to send my lesson plan before I start the class. It was my busy work again. I though today is my challenge day for me because since morning I have a lot of challenge things to do.
